The most surprising journeys often start quietly. Khatuna’s story started like that. At first, we noticed nothing unusual, until speech difficulties emerged and a visit to the doctor forced us to face reality.

Receiving the diagnosis was both confusing and clarifying at the same time. I had many questions, but one thing was immediately clear to me: I would never allow Khatuna to feel that she was incapable of anything. I never restricted her; on the contrary, I included her in everything and gave her the freedom to discover her own strengths.

Our greatest challenge came at school, when a teacher told me that Khatuna would not be able to study there and that she should be transferred to a special school. Those words were heartbreaking, but they did not stop us. Khatuna spent twelve years in that school. She attended banquets and celebrations, always beautifully dressed and fully accepted as an equal. She is part of society and she always will be.

The day center played a crucial role in Khatuna’s development. Where she once hesitated to interact with others, she now has many friends. It was there that she discovered her creative voice through art: painting, jewelry-making, and acting. This journey even took her to Poland, where she spent ten days performing the play “The Grasshopper and the Ant” alongside other children. It was her first truly independent step and one of the most unforgettable experiences of her life.

To other parents, I want to say this: never limit your children and never tell them that something is impossible. Trust them. Give them space and opportunity. Children will find their own path, and our role is to be their strongest and most unwavering support.
