Nino’s Down syndrome gave everything in our lives a different name. In the beginning, we lived in uncertainty, taking each step forward with the help of doctors and medication. That period passed successfully, and today she no longer needs medicine. What remains is speech difficulty, but it has never been a barrier between us. I understand her without words and know her wishes by heart.
Public opinion was never an obstacle for me. I could never imagine keeping a child within four walls. From the time she was little, Nino has been my constant companion. We went everywhere together, used public transportation, and I took her to the day care center. That freedom bore fruit, today, she can do many things independently.
Nino is incredibly warm and affectionate. Often, she will simply walk through the room, turn to me, and say, “I love you.” In those words, her entire heart is visible. For me, that love is more important than anything else. Our relationship is built on unconditional love.
When it comes to her development, the day care center changed everything. There, the children learn and grow together. Recently, they staged a play in which every beneficiary participated. They performed with such dedication that the audience remembered only their talent. This sense of discipline and cooperation carries into everyday life as well, setting the table, cleaning up, helping at home. These small acts teach independence and teamwork.
It is vital that children are not isolated. Take them outside. Involve them in everything. Give them freedom. Society must learn to accept and love them, because these children are capable of filling the world with an extraordinary kind of love.
